North Harringay, winners of the 2015-16 League trophy.

On Friday 1st July, 30 children from Coleridge, North Harringay and Risley primary schools made their way to Chestnuts Park to compete in the Haringey Schools Cycling League Finals.

The light rain towards the end of the day did not disturb the competitive spirit. It was a tight competition but Risley pedalled that much faster and gave it their all. Defeating the competition in all but one race, Risley came away at the top of the points table for Round 6.

While the results, and total scores for the League competition, were being calculated, the children spent time racing for fun. It was great to have the competitors socialising and building friendships across the different schools.

Labijon from North Harringay Primary raced for the first time and said, “I’m so glad I came and took part but I’m sad that I won’t be racing again because I’ll be going to my new secondary school.”

Although Risley stole the win on the day’s races, North Harringay Primary had accumulated the most points over the year. Councilor Peray Ahmet presented the awards.

“It was hard cycling today because the grass was a bit wet. I couldn’t believe we won [the League], I was so happy!” said Travis from North Harringay Primary School.

Five schools took to the grass at Ducketts Common for round 4 of the 2015-16 League.

Teams from St. Aidan’s, Muswell Hill, Coleridge, Risley and North Harringay primaries took part in fourteen separate races in an afternoon that saw fierce competition and some tense battles for the finish line.

The League’s first visit to Ducketts Common saw some thrilling racing.

Each rider from the five schools had the opportunity to race twice, earning points for their school in the annual League competition.

North Harringay managed to extend its leading position in the League standings, with Coleridge taking second place in the day’s points.

Risley dominated in the Girls 24″ category, winning two of the three races. St. Aidan’s riders had a good day, taking several second and third places in all but one category.

The battle for League points continues when the teams meet for round 5 at Chestnuts Park on 27th May.

North Harringay Primary School held onto its narrow lead over Risley Avenue in the HSCL competition after an afternoon of gruelling uphill racing in Finsbury Park.

Round Three of the 2015-16 League saw riders from five schools compete in the annual hill climb event.

49 riders from 5 schools raced the 300m climb in Finsbury Park..

Coleridge, Muswell Hill, North Harringay, Risley Avenue and St. Aidan’s raced against the clock on the challenging 300m course.

North Harringay and Risley took first place in the boys’ and girls’ races respectively, with several riders making impressive sub-minute times.

Each rider was able to have two attempts on the climb, with their faster time being used in the competition.

Congratulations go to North Harringay’s Mehmet who achieved the day’s record time of 46.45 seconds.

North Harringay notched up 75 points, maintaining its position at the top of League table, with Risley currently a close second. All may change in Round 4, with racing moving to the grass track from May.

New League records came and went in the time trial event at the Finsbury Park Athletics track last week.

Six schools competed in the annual time trial event.

Six schools competed against the clock in Round Two of the 2015-16 League.

Coleridge, Muswell Hill, North Harringay, Risley Avenue and St. Aidan’s were joined by newcomers Rokesley.

Despite a strong headwind on the return straight, the afternoon’s racing saw new records on the 400m track in both the boys and girls 26” categories.

North Harringay were the first to set the day’s tempo, achieving a new record time for the boys of 49.94” (beating last year’s time of 51.86”).

Celebrations were short lived, however, as Risley’s girls shaved off another half second to record 49.44” in their fastest lap of the circuit.

Coleridge notched up the third-fastest time in the girls category, while Muswell Hill, St. Aidan’s and Rokesely all had riders in the top 10.

The 2015-16 HSCL League competition opened last week with a cyclo-cross event in Finsbury Park.

North Harringay took the lead in the cyclo-cross event.

North Harringay, Risley Avenue and St. Aidan’s primary schools competed in afternoon sunshine on a course that was mercifully dry despite recent heavy rain.

28 riders took part in four races plus a relay, with North Harringay Primary coming top in the points table.

The afternoon saw some great racing, with all school teams showing determined riding on the challenging course. Riders needed good technique to negotiate the sharp bend before a particularly slippery uphill straight. There was fierce competition for first and second places, particularly in the Boys 24, Girls 24 and relay races.

The next event is a time trial in Finsbury Park on 5th February 2016.

The first HSCL event for 2015-16 was a trip to the Lee Valley Velopark.
Riders from Risley, Muswell Hill, St. Aidan’s, Coleridge and North Harringay primary schools spent the day experiencing the one-mile road racing circuit which encircles the iconic Olympic Velodrome.

Risley Avenue Primary have won the Haringey Schools Cycling League for the second year running.

Winners of the 2014-15 HSCL trophy: Risley Avenue Primary School

After another emphatic win at the League Finale at Bruce Castle Park, Risley finished 80 points clear at the top of the League table with 455 points.

Risley’s girl team deserve special mention, after taking first place in all six 24″ and 26″ races. One of their star riders, Jasmin, won every one of her races in the entire 2014-15 League.

North Harringay Primary School were runners up with 375 points. St. Aidan’s Primary, who unfortunately missed the final round, came third with 226 points.

Muswell Hill and Chestnuts primaries, who took part in two of the eight rounds, came next with 97 and 75 points respectively.

The first date of the 2015-16 League will be a coached session the Olympic VeloPark road circuit on 2nd October 2015. The first round of the trophy competition will be a cyclocross event at Finsbury Park on 6th November 2015.

Competing against North Harringay, St Aidan’s and Chestnuts in the second grass track event of the year, Risley Primary School showed once again just how fast they are.

Risley Primary has been at the top of the League standings throughout the season.

They took first place in seven out of the afternoon’s ten races, and second place in four.

They’ve been consistent too, increasing their lead over the other schools in practically every round. They currently have a 61-point advantage in the League table, with North Harringay in second place.

North Harringay’s boys managed first positions in three races, and it was great to see St. Aidan’s win the second boys 26” race.

Meanwhile, Chestnuts, making their first appearance in this year’s League, notched up a respectable 36 points, to take third place in the eighth round’s standings.

The League Finale and Round 8 will take place at Bruce Castle on 10th July.
