Cycle racing between primary schools is a great way for children to get inspired and motivated about cycling.
We believe that giving children the opportunity to have fun on a bike helps builds their confidence and bike-handling skills — and makes them more likely to want to keep cycling.
It compliments the bike training children receive through Bikeability. By promoting cycling as a utility and sporting activity in tandem, primary school cycle racing can help create a culture within schools where all the children are exposed to some aspects of cycling.
Other schools have shown how the catalyst for this culture can be via the racing team. In one primary school in Hackney, the number of children that cycle to school has increased fivefold since they started a cycle racing programme.
