And we’re back! Round 1 of Haringey Schools Cycling League took place on the first Friday of October in Finsbury Park. It was a beautiful, warm autumn day with riders and adults happy to be outside, getting back to what we love – riding our bikes as fast as possible. 

The season started with a hill climb, where riders cycle as fast as they can up the hill over approximately 200 metres. For those who know Finsbury Park, we were on the internal road to the north-east side, parallel-ish to Green Lanes. 

As usual, our British Cycling coach Nadjie was able to give riders tips and tricks for improving their times. Debbie was back to make sure sure riders had the correct cycle for their size; helping them achieve their best times.

We all cheered the riders up the hill, where times were carefully recorded for each go. Congratulations to the quickest Year 6 boy Alex P from St Mary’s C of E Primary with the best time in his group – 21.84. Fastest Year 6 girl goes to Isabella from Risley Avenue with a score of 20.39 – IMPRESSIVE 

Fastest Year 5 boy goes to Alex M (St Mary’s) with 21.66 and for the girls, it’s Emilia also from St Mary’s with 23.08. 

Congratulations to Coldfall and Risley Avenue who tied in first place with an impressive 146 points. (Points were awarded for the rider’s best times with a bonus five points for Year 4 children). Stroud Green came third with 135 and St Mary’s a very close fourth with 132.

Former Stroud Green pupil Lucas visited the event to cheer on his former schoolmates and take part in a friendly race against parent-volunteer Andrew. Lucas managed to win by a fraction of a second!

Thank you to everyone who came to the VeloPark on 22 May for Round 8 of the League. We hope the pictures capture the day’s racing. Round 8 represents the last scoring round for the 2025 – 2026 season which has seen fantastic energetic racing indoors and out. Unfortunately, there was record rainfall earlier this year which caused two event cancellations.

Many League events are individual races on grass circuits. We generally have two roller-racing events per season in which riders are also working individually. At the VeloPark we tried something new with riders required to work together and encourage other team members over the line. It was exciting to watch something different and see riders get to grips with the format. However, if we do this again, we will plan a coaching session on team racing as one of our preceding events. We always have a British Cycling coach at our events which are fully planned and risk assessed.

For the VeloPark races schools were awarded 10 points for every race they won. For every Y4 rider, schools received a bonus 5 points in addition. This gives the following points for Round 8

• Campsbourne 30 + bonus 15 = 45
• Holy Trinity = 5
• North Harringay = unable to attend
• Risley 20 + bonus 10 = 30
• St Aidan’s = did not attend
• St Mary’s 30 + bonus 10 = 40
• South Grove = 5
• Stroud Green 30 + bonus 10 = 40

Congratulations to new joiner Campsbourne Primary for winning the first race they have attended. Good work!

The final Leaderboard for 2025 – 2026 season is:

CONGRATULATIONS and CHAPEAU to Stroud Green. Stroud Green Primary retake the trophy after a gap of three years.

There will be certificates for all riders at our last event on Friday 26 June (Downhills Park). Riders will have another chance to race against each other before the break. (Please see back of our certificates for other cycling in and around Haringey).

Did anyone see our cycle transport? A PedalMe cargo cycle and trailer moved our cycles from Haringey to the Olympic Park. Tim was our PedalMe rider getting through the traffic on his Urban Arrow e-cycle with music and loud horn! PedalMe Urban Arrows are purpose-built e-cargo cycles and take people as well as goods. 

Please join us for a competitive (non scoring) event on Friday 26 June in Downhills Park. There will be games and cycle racing for all.

We had wonderful weather for our first racing on grass of the season.

Risley came first, and a strong performance by St Mary’s in second and Stroud Green in third. But Stroud Green still have enough points to stay top of the leaderboard above Risley and then St Mary’s.

Each race was two laps around the kidney bean shaped course, with a tricky tight turn in the middle. Four teams took part and our British Cycling coach Nadjie was able to give everyone tips on gears before their practice laps.

Each team won at least one of the finals – St Mary’s and Stroud Green both won two.

In the boys races, from St Mary’s, Godsend finished ahead of his twin Godwin.
