Firstly, we’d like to say a really massive thanks to amazing Debbie, who’s stepping back from volunteering after very many years of keeping the League running smoothly – from ferrying countless bikes, rakes, stanchions, tape, bell and finishing flag… to liaising with schools, volunteers, park keepers and British Cycling… to running the HSCL accounts… not to mention making sure every child has a number and checking that no child misses their race and then tracking their progress and points through each heat and final and then carefully calculating all the scores afterwards. Debbie, THANK YOU!!
For Round 9, our final scoring round of the season, six schools headed to Finsbury Park for the first time in a couple of years.
Despite rain the day before, thankfully the wet weather forecast for race day didn’t actually materialise and the ground was still firm enough to go ahead.
We saw some fantastic racing on a variety of surfaces, around a challenging route – laid out by course-maestro Andy – which included a technical section through the woods and over significantly bumpier grass than Ducketts Common.
Visiting British Cycling coach Nadjie, standing in for our regular coach Ze, gave all the riders enthusiastic training advice during their warm-up laps – particularly on how to set off powerfully and use gears to best effect. Tips that were picked up on and repeated loudly by the vocal cheerleaders as they urged on their friends during races.
Stroud Green came first, ahead of Risley, who just pipped St Mary’s for second place.
South Grove won four of the finals, Risley three, Holy Trinity two and St Aidan’s one.
Across the season, looking at the total of the best 6 results for each team, Risley came top, with Stroud Green second and North Harringay third.
Our next event is racing in Downhills Park on Fri 4 July at 11am.
Huge thanks to all the riders as well as staff and volunteers for coming out in force – and as always, for all your enthusiastic cheering!
